A Custom Redesigned Classic Car Door Handle: Reverse Engineering With a Built-In Upgrade
The Challenge
Restoring a classic car is a labour of love — but it comes with a recurring obstacle: parts that simply aren't made any more. When a classic car restorer approached KAMNATEC, they were facing exactly this problem. The door handle on a vehicle that has long since gone out of production was worn and failing, and sourcing a genuine replacement was effectively impossible.
For restorers, this is a familiar dead end. Once a manufacturer stops producing a part, the only options are to hunt through salvage yards for another worn original, commission expensive one-off machining, or abandon the restoration detail altogether. None of these deliver a reliable, lasting result.
There was also a deeper issue. The original handle, like many parts from its era, had inherent design weaknesses. Even a pristine original would eventually suffer the same wear and stress failures — so simply replicating it would mean reproducing its flaws along with its form.
The KAMNATEC Solution
KAMNATEC began by 3D scanning the original door handle, capturing its exact geometry, contours, and dimensions down to fine detail. This scan formed the foundation for a complete CAD reconstruction of the part.
Rather than producing a straight copy, the team took the opportunity to improve it. During the CAD redesign, the handle was strengthened — reinforcing the areas most prone to stress and wear in the original design. The result was a part that retained the authentic appearance and fit the restorer needed, while delivering strength and durability the original never had.
This is the advantage reverse engineering offers when it's done by an engineering team rather than a simple scan-and-copy service: the part can be rebuilt better than it began.
The Result
The restorer received a custom redesigned classic car door handle that matched the original in form and fit, but outperformed it in strength and longevity. What started as an unsourceable, failing component became a reliable, reinforced part — solving an immediate restoration problem and removing the risk of the same failure recurring down the track.
For the restorer, it meant a faithful restoration without compromise. For KAMNATEC, it was another example of turning an impossible sourcing problem into a better-than-original solution.
